Trail running, mountain biking, paddling, packrafting, abseiling and wilderness navigation.
These are just some of the skills you need to be an Adventure Racer. The four members of the BMX Bandits Adventure Racing Team certainly have these skills down after years of outdoor experiences. Mixed with a tough training regime and their ‘never-give-up’ attitude, they are unstoppable.
Each of the Bandits has their own strengths and weaknesses, but when the pressure is on it all comes down to teamwork. They keep their spirits high with bad jokes and worse singing during long days – and nights – of pain and suffering in the wilderness.
Adventure racing is a multi-disciplinary team sport held in remote areas, events lasting from a few hours to up to two weeks! Depending on the race, the teams must run, bike, paddle and engage in ‘mystery disciplines’ like snorkeling, abseiling and white water rafting across unmarked wilderness to reach their destination. They are racing against the clock the whole time. This means extreme environments, extreme distances, extreme sports and extremely little sleep!
As the team continues racing through the night, their visibility is extremely important. They have to be able to keep sight of each other in complete darkness while travelling through deep wilderness areas or out on the open water. In the event of an accident the team also has to be able to be found by medical officials or search and rescue crews.
The next big adventure for these four superhuman guys is the Adventure Racing World Championships, a non-stop week of racing through the rugged terrain of Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. We can’t wait to follow the BMX Bandits on their 600 km journey through the wilderness!
